Harischandragad Via Nalichi Vaat - Trek of Extremes

Harishchandragad via Nalichi Vaat (Ascend) – Trek of Extremes (24-25 Dec 2011)

As the weekend of Christmas was approaching , I made up my mind to go to Rajgad – Torana trek. But a week earlier, I got a mail from Mumbai Hikers suggesting trek to Harischandragad via Nalichi Vaat. The trek which I decided I should do when it came in my way. The trek was organised by Wild Rangers group, which was quite new to me. I phoned the group leader and he readily welcomed me. Trek schedule suggested that group had to assemble at Kalyan ST Depot on 23 rd Night 10 o clock. Thanks to my boss I got weekend OFF right from Friday evening. Now my immediate target was to reach Kalyan by train from Pune station. After office I rushed to my room, bought some life saving eatables and stuffed it into my bag. My small laptop bag started suffocating after it was filled with unmindful things, then I trimmed down the less preferable things and it said OK. Got to Pune station well before time, Indrayani Express was yet to arrive. After and half an hour wait, the train roared into the station with its tummy full with passengers from southern Maharashtra. My trek started with me standing 3 hours in crowded Indrayani express in an unexplainable position. All types of sellers right from chikki waalas, chai waala to vadapaav waala were moving in the alley which made standee passenger's life difficult. With great patience I managed to reach Kalyan at around 9 o clock and immediately outside the railway station I stopped near ST Depot. I called the group leader Mr. Mayur Phadale and he said there was some more time to go, so we had snacks in a nearby hotel.
As the clock was approaching 11 pm trekkers were assembling one by one in Kalyan ST Depot. Still two of them were stuck in delayed railway traffic of Mumbai. At 11:15 pm we decided to leave the remaining two trekkers and proceed to the base village. And Ohhh my god!!! the ST buses were all full, I thought my suffering ended when I alighted from Indrayani, but the night had some different plans for me. Again 2 hours standing we got down at a village named Savarne, which is at the starting of Malshej Ghat. Trekkers started to flash their torches as it was pitch dark due to Amavasya that night. Another group leader Mr. Prashik was waiting for us at the stop with a guide, who was hired to help us finding route in the trek.  At police station near the stop we had a head count, from which I came to know that we were overall 15 trekkers excluding the two which remain behind. Thereafter in pitch dark night we started our trek to the base village Belpada which was 2 hours away from Savarne. With the help of torch we were moving through the forest on a small stony way. After a climb on small hill and then descend we began to see the lights of Belpada Village. On immediate right of us was a huge wall like structure standing tall against the backdrop of sky. Only the curved shape was visible in the pitch dark night. Some of the trekkers who have been earlier to Harishchandragad, told me that it was the KonkanKada (Kada means “Cliff”). Making probable images of KonkanKada in my mind in the way, we reached the base village Belpada at around 3:30 am in the night. Our halt was in the village school which was very different from the school we have in big cities. We slept in the passage in front of the school, waiting for the god of light to rise and make the view of mountains more clear. At around 6 am in morning my eyes opened and couldn’t believe the awesome view in front of me. It was beautiful, no words to express. Immediately I got my cam from my overstuffed bag (it was difficult to find though) and clicked few pictures of the mountains standing tall with an attitude in front of us. We couldn’t see the sunrise because the mountains were facing west and sun rose right behind them. After getting rid of daily morning activities we had a hearty breakfast of “Chaha – Pohe” made in one of the villagers house. By now sun had rose up and was showing its existence against the mighty mountains. With our water bottles filled and conscience filled with full of determination we were ready to hike the mountain. Prior to start we had an introduction round, by which I came to know that more than half of the trekkers were 10-15 years of experience in trekking. One of the Uncle (was looking around 50 years of age) had 35 years of experience in trekking. Will introducing myself I was feeling small in front of such experienced people, then also I got through the formality quickly. This was my fifth trek since I started trekking regularly from July 2011 and I was feeling confident and comfortable in a trekker’s shoes.

Trek started at around 8 pm and slowly within half an hour we left the base village Belpada behind. The village guy was with us to show the route and according to him the trek can be completed in 4 hours, but that was according to him. We were new to the mountains and I knew we will take more than 4 hours to complete the trek. Right from starting I was with right behind the guide and the guy was hopping stone to stone like a child with only a pair of slipper at his disposal. At the other end all trekkers had best possible shoes in the market to make their walk comfortable through the rocky path. Talking about the route which we chosed to reach Harischandragad was called as “Nalichi Vaat”. It was called so because it resemble as a pipe, like a cut made between two mountains. This cut was made by huge load of water gushing through it in the monsoon. So we were actually hiking the mountain on a route were in monsoon a huge waterfall runs down with brutal force. There were huge stone boulders in the way, which were making our trek difficult, but somehow found way to negotiate them and the whole group was moving further. We had to take intermittent breaks as the hike was really steep and the angle was increasing by every step we took.
Slowly and steadily we were moving towards our first rock patch, which were supposed to climb using ropes. Our guide who was merrily moving around climbed the rock patch at one go and anchored the rope on a huge boulder. I also climbed the rock patch quite comfortably and was quite satisfied with my performance. One by one all trekkers crossed the patch. Further we left behind the stone boulders and we came into a section were there was loose soil. We had to take every step carefully as every movement was making the soil beneath us move and trekkers were slipping over the surface occasionally. Small stones were falling on the trekkers behind and the trekker leading in front was calling for the stone falling from the slip. Meanwhile, I just took out a stone from the rocky surface of the mountain and applied some force between my palm. And too my surprise it crumbled like biscuit, such was the condition of the surface which we were walking upon. And then came the tallest rock patch of the trek, it was around 20 feet tall and way too flat. I was the first trekker to cross the first rock patch, but now I was afraid of the 20 feet wall standing in front of me. Then I decided I better stay behind and watch few trekkers go up by using the rope. Some of the experienced trekkers who had done lot of sessions of rock climbing, climbed the patch without using rope. I was novice to this art so I first watched 2-3 trekkers going up by rope and then decided to give it a go. I climbed the rock patch comfortably by holding onto the rope, but without rope it was not possible for me. I looked down the valley and I got an idea of what difficult path we had negotiated to come up. It was an amazing scene we left behind.

Further there were two small rock patches, which we climbed without using ropes. We stopped to have lunch in between, but I had already filled my stomach with enough material during the hike so I decided to sleep under the tree. After spending 45 mins resting, we were feeling a bit energetic to climb the last hike. We started and completed the last hike in 15 mins and from that point we could see the amazing view of KonkanKada. It was a overhanging cliff with a shape like snake’s hood spreading over an expanse of almost half a kilometer. By the time we reached in front of Konkankada it was 4:30 pm and the view of cliff was making our dangerous and exhausting hike more satisfied. We just rested on the point to fill our eyes with the amazing view. Far ahead we can see people gathering on the point to watch sunset. It was one more hour to go for sunset. We proceeded further to the Konkankada point to have view of sun going down. Meanwhile suddenly surrounding air was filled with honeybees, my haunting memories of Bhimashankar trek became fresh. But the local guy told us not to run, just stand in one place and honeybees will not harm you. And after some time we got rid of those stinging animals. Talking about the sunset at KonkanKada point, it was a special and different sunset from the ones which we see daily. Sky turned into golden colour and the rays could be seen more sharp and penetrating. Part by part the ball of fire went down way below the horizon and it was a beautiful experience in my life.

After experience a beautiful sunset, we moved towards our night halt. As it was Christmas time, the premises of harischandragad were filled with trekkers and picknickers. We were lucky enough to find a cave to stay in for the night. I quickly made by sleeping arrangement in the centre of the cave supporting the wall. As night came down at harishchandragad, we could see camp fires coming up at different points on the fort. The fort had caves for the people to stay and also 100% pure drinking water. Our leader arranged “Pitla Bhakari” for us and we ate it hurriedly as we all were hungry by the exhaustion we had today. Around 10:30 pm, we submitted to sleep in the cave. The temperature outside was very low and chilling winds were flowing. But inside the cave it was considerably warm and comfortable. Only the surface on which we were sleeping was stony and uneven. But who cares, everybody slept as if they were in coma. Its an amazing fact to know that, in normal circumstances its impossible to sleep on such a surface, but as our body were all exhausted with the hike, we didn’t realized when sleep came.
Morning again came up at 6:30 am and outside the cave now we can see the exact view of the premises of Harischandragad. There was a beautiful temple of Harischandreshwar in the premises and a small pond besides it. I got a few clicks of the view and decided not to enter the temple as I hadn’t bathed since yesterday. That’s how it goes during trek, you don’t get to bath for 2-3 days, that’s abnormal in normal human being’s life but normal in a trekker’s life.

Thereafter 10-12 trekkers decided to hike the second highest point in Maharashtra i.e. Taramati peak, which was exactly above the cave in which we halted. Some of the trekkers who had earlier hiked to Taramati decided to stay behind and keep watch on our personal belongings. In half an hour we climbed through the sparse forest and were on the Taramati Peak. Again the feeling of “Top of the world” came and I realized for this one moment we made a difficult hike yesterday. But every thing was worth, just worth. We could see few peaks and forts from the top. To my surprise there was “Limboo Pani Waala” on the top of the peak. He showed us some peaks like Naneghat, Kalsubai etc.

Then we decided to descend the peak and came down to the cave in 20 mins. It was 11 am and we were ready to descend harishchandragad. But now we we decided it to do by another route called as “Tolar Khind – Khireshwar route”. We started and after crossing 2-3 mountains in between we started to descend the steepy route. The route was not as difficult as “Nalichi Vaat”, it was provided by supporting bars at the difficult points and grooves in the rocks were made at steep points. Taking less breaks than the climb we came down to Khireshwar i.e. the base village in 4 hours. We were in Khireshwar around 3 pm and luckily we got bus to the main highway from where we were supposed to catch a bus to Kalyan. The route from Khireshwar to Bankar Fata was amazing, as the road was going besides a huge dam. We got down at Bankar Fata at around 4 pm and got a bus to Kalyan. We were again sitting down on the floor of ST bus back to Kalyan. Overall it was a thrilling experience in real terms. Great adventure and a great challenge that we overcame in two days. Thanks to the Wild Rangers group, they made good arrangements and made our life easy in difficult circumstances. Three Cheers for the Leaders of Wild Rangers !! Thanks for everything.

Listen To My Heart

Listen to My Heart,
He will say "I only beat for you"
See through my Eyes,
You will see "they only search for you"
Every morning rises to see you smiling,
Under the shadow of your eyes its a new beginning,
Every prayer wishes to come on your lips,
Where the Serene breeze tries to touch your feet,
The day when i find that perfect world,
were love enriches and truth never suffers,
I will take you there with all my affection,
leaving the dark world of futile imagination
I know you will come with me to the euphoria,
Where our soul will find peace and love grows.

Naneghat – Freedom at the pass of coins

Naneghat – Freedom at the pass of coins

I slept on 14th August with a fear that I would be late for the trek again as I did last time. So I gathered cellphones of mine, my father and mother and ON the alarm at three different timings. So if one cellphone fails to ring, I can bank on the other two. That’s the general tendency of human being to keep less trust on technology and Cellphones are prime example of failure at emergency times. Whatever, we all have stopped wearing watches and stop keeping alarm clocks at our place. I wonder if too much dependency on technology will shrink our homes at some point of time in future, a hypothetical thought though.

Thanks to God, I woke up early on 15th August. As it was 65th Independence day, TIE organized a trek to Naneghat, the group which I been with to Bhimashankar Trek. Hoping that this trek would be as adventurous and exciting as Bhimashankar I enrolled for it willingly. Got through my morning chores as early as I can and as usual my mother was yelling at me for being careless and forgetting things. And as usual I was also recollecting what I must have forgotten to put in my bag. Paratha’s were ready to hop into my bag for afternoon’s lunch. Bag was relatively lighter than Bhimashankar trek as today’s trek was a single day affair. Then also I don’t forget to put shawl and newspaper in my bag, still remember the night when we slept on the haridwar ghat with sky as our shelter. After that day I keep myself ready to face sudden challenges. With my new woodland shoes I was ready for my second trek. Borrowed scooty from my Aunt as my Sister was unwilling to give her Aviator. Reached station well in time, called Ganesh (organizer) and learnt from him that I had to buy Kalyan return tickets on my own unlike the earlier trek. Again I missed the train, but this time another organizer Mr. Kunal Chitnis was also left behind with me due to over curious Mumbai Police.
The group plan was to hoist flag at the pinnacle of Naneghat and for that Kunal had brought a 8 foot long stick with him. Suspicious cops questioned him for more than 15 mins and went through his bag. Poor Kunal was drenched in sweat when I saw him at the Kalyan end of Platform no.2 of Thane stn and I thought he started trekking from Bhiwandi itself. Aditi brought the stick to us, which was now a symbol of TIE’s resilience. And yaa TIE means Trek it Easy, a perfect name for a trek group that’s what I think and many will agree to it. Hat’s off to the person who suggested the brand name. Aditi greeted me with a nice and cute childish smile rising from her chubby cheeks. Aditi, Shriraj, Kunal and Me were together on lead in Bhimashankar Trek. Will talk about Shriraj, the cool rapper later.
Kunal and me got into train to Kalyan leaving Aditi behind to wait for her friends. In the train, I discovered some new group members. I preferred to keep silent and enjoy the view outside of a pleasant morning. Meanwhile I learnt from Kunal that some 10-15 people were going to join us in Kalyan, they were all family guys who unfortunately didn’t know the meaning of trek.

Kalyan was hustling and bustling as usual. I could see some similar faces from last trek standing in cluster. Some of them were Mr. Ashish Chawla, Ameya Gupte, Shriraj Bhide, Krupali, Akhilesh, Madhuja and there were quite a few which I can’t remember now. Got into discussions of downfall of Indian cricket team with Ashish sir, he was looking fit and fine after trekking for more than 6-7 weeks continuously(I mean only Sundays). Basically he is a tough guy and very friendly. Met my friend Shriraj Bhide and we again decided to lead the trek. Ganesh and Aditya went away to arrange for Trax by which we were supposed to travel from Kalyan to Naneghat Base. Shriraj who hails from Kalyan, claimed that he knew every nook and corner of the city, made the whole group walk a muddy road which was a detour to a shortcut. When we reached near the vehicles everybody cursed Shriraj for taking a long route. Aditya and myself was again on the front seat of trax and he made me remember that it was the same during bhimashankar trek, but the vehicle was TumTum. It was one and half hour drive from Kalyan to Naneghat base approximately 60 kms. On the way picked up the family guys who brought there own vehicles. Got to know that some people where first timers and they were asking silly questions to Ganesh and he was answering them very coolly. Aditya was curious about going for Job or doing MBA after his BMS degree. Ganesh with his loaded gun (camera) started shooting, he is an excellent photographer.

Reached the base around 9:15 am and discovered that the family guys were already there and were looking in a picnic mood. They brought little kids with them and were asking the organizers how long is the trek and will the children be able to walk so much. Not there fault, they thought that there must be a waterfall and everyone would get wet in the water till evening. But sorry, all the TIE members were in serious trekking mode, ready to conquer the challenging Naneghat pass. After introduction ceremony, we all proceeded making our way through thick forest towards the black wall. First stretch of trek was through beautiful seasonal streams and was less arduous. Ganesh, Shriraj, Dev, myself and other two three people were with us leading. The pinnacle of Naneghat was looking beautiful from the base, it was full of clouds and mist. Butterflies were all over the jungle but not a single of them was ready to sit still for a good shot. I ran almost for 15-20 mins behind them, but they refused to submit. I would have also shown them my patience but it was time to move further with the group. After some time I came to know that Aunties and Kids from the family guys group gave up and were returning to the base again as they were not used to such treacherous hikes. Again Kunal went to leave them to the base, as they were our responsibility though they didn’t pay for the trek.
Shriraj, the rapper bought two mobiles with him. When I asked him the reason, he started rocking English songs on one of the cellphones. Suddenly the whole forest was filled with songs of Eminem, backstreet boys and sorry I don’t know much names. Me, Dev and Shriraj were enjoying the music, but some of the trekkers hated the nuisance which was corrupting the silence of forest. But Shriraj was in no mood to stop his songs, he had fully loaded the battery before coming for the trek. At a point of time, a bee came humming towards me and the nightmare of Bhimashankar trek passed through my mind. Hurriedly I shooed it way and there were no other friends of her humming around us.

As we moved further, the path was getting more slippery. Every step was advanced with utmost care, anyways our speed was good. On a plateau we made a halt that was around 5 kms from the base. There we got the first best shot of the trek, which was a Silver Spider perched on my shoe. Ganesh zoomed his camera as best as he can and got a Ultra microscopic image of the spider. I also got a good shot from my Olympus macro mode. It was a beautiful creature indeed.

After that halt the real trek started through the cut between the two mountains of Naneghat. It was damn slippery, the forest was getting more denser and the path more steeper. Our second halt was an interesting one, because me, shriraj and Dev decided to buy the plot to make a hotel at that spot. Shriraj’s imagination knew no barriers about what the Hotel would contain. Ropeways, Jacuzzi, Bar, entertainment park and many such hypothetical things, it went ON and ON. My cheeks were paining with laughter and then we decided to proceed further.

On the way we bumped into many fellow trekkers, some were of old age too but looking very enthusiastic. View from the top was getting more awesome as we were moving further, but the electric lines over the mountains were marring the beauty of the place. In every picture you could see them, the pic becomes so artificial if an electric line comes in between.  There was a little water reservoir in the way, where we quenched our thirst and filled our empty bottles. As the top was getting nearer, we could see caves and monkeys hopping here and there. One of the monkey was looking very unfriendly and with his open mouth he was threatening us. It was difficult to pass him without getting afraid, but got through somehow.
It was lunch time now and we decided to have lunch in the caves. Slowly every trekker was coming there and after sometime the whole cave got filled with TIE members. Ancient caves are the prime feature of Naneghat pass. My imagination couldn’t overcome the thought that how these caves must be carved in this mountain. It must have required years to carve such a beautiful cave in the mountain with water reservoir besides them. Floor and wall perfectly leveled, no sign of fracture, no leakage, everything was just perfect. Looking at such constructions, only one question comes to my mind “Has man really advanced in the field of construction?” To my view “Absolutely Not.” Ancient construction like forts and caves are masterpiece of construction and architecture. If somebody doesn’t believe me, they should immediately visit Ajanta and Ellora Caves. There you will find unimaginable structures. Coming back to the Naneghat Cave, there were letters in stone age language carved on the wall which could be seen all over the cave. But again some of the unmindful lovers had incorporated there names on the walls.

Everybody opened their tiffin box and in no time the whole cave was filled with smell of delicacies. Monkeys couldn’t resist it, as they were seen sitting on the mouth of the cave waiting for someone to come and feed them. But they were not brave enough to come inside and confront another gang of monkeys (TIE members). A voice started hitting my ears like hammer and it was not hard to identify the person and she was Krupali. In the above paragraph I was talking about no fracture in the walls of cave, but I requested her to be less loud as there was danger to happen so. She is a real malvani, very expressive indeed, but very good at heart. Aditi was unfulfilled by the lunch she had bought and I shared my parathas with her. She and her group thanked me for the treat. Meanwhile I learnt from Ganesh that Kunal had return to the base as he was also feeling a little feverish. And to tell you about Kunal Chitnis, he is my MBA friend Namita Chitins’ brother. I started trekking with TIE because of Namita, she told me to join their group for Bhimashankar and I was ON to it. As she was enjoying exotic beaches of Konkan and was unable to join us for Naneghat.

After Lunch we proceeded towards the pinnacle for flag hosting. Towards the end of the cut between the two mountains, there was a stone pitcher (pot) kept. It is said that during the reign of the King Satavana, it was used as toll collection booth for the entry in Pune. People passing from there used to drop coins in that pot, and for that only thing the name Naneghat immortalized in the history.

After rejecting two sites for Flag hosting we decided a nice spot, showing the breathtaking scenery of sahyadris. The symbol of TIE’s resilience, the 8 foot long Stick was erected on the tripod and flag was shoved into it. But the wind up there was too harsh, the flag was not standing on itself. Atlast, Ashish sir decided to hold it straight and everybody standed in a semi circle around the flag. Ganesh positioned the camera away from the group and started the video mode. With the wind moving, our hearts filled with patriotism and with national anthem on our lips we saluted our national flag. It was the proudest moment of trek and the day. The shouts of Bharat Mata Ki Jai, filled the air and echoed back from the walls of sahyadris. I hopped to get a snap of the whole group. Just when I was about to click there was a ear deafening noise from the adjacent mountain. I guess it was of landslide, but it was like a thunder.

Afterwards we moved towards the last spot of our trek that was “Nanacha Angtha”, it was in the shape of thumb. All of our group sat on the point, facing Thane District and our back to Pune district. Suddenly in a moment fog filled the whole mountain and at the next moment everything was clean and pure. It was the one of the most beautiful scenery I have seen in my life. We clicked some pictures on the top and started descending.

Again the descend was too slippery and my legs were shaking like anything because they were in utmost attention mode. Again we passed through our plot and again Shriraj reminded me of our deal to buy that plot for a hotel. Though it may sound funny, we were talking seriously of our plans. Shriraj and myself was leading again and Shriraj’s cellphone battery didn’t seem to die after honking for more than 4 hours. We reached the plateau were we got Silver Spider shot and decided to wait there till rest of the group comes. When the whole group came, we started again and didn’t stop till we reached the base. There we met Kunal who was bored to death between the family guys. One of the family guys was robbed of Rs. 3000 by breaking the window and taking the cash out of the wallet kept in the car. It was indeed a sad incident, but the family guys seem to be OK with it, rather there was no option to investigate the matter. Whole group gathered and again 3 trax were ready to leave us at Kalyan. Everyone got into it and we reached Kalyan around 6:45 pm. After that we had some TIE sponsored snacks and everybody bid a good bye to others. That’s how our trek ended in a joyful mood. It was not as adventurous as Bhimashankar but it was a great Independence trek. Thanks to TIE for making by Independence day special. Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra

Love you till the end of Time

Love you till the end of time,
Love you till the day you will be mine.

Still the day flashes over my mind,
When you came into my life with a smile divine,
That day was the most beautiful spring,
When i saw you and my heart ringed.

Love you till the end of time,
Love you till the day you will be mine.

Whenever i open my eyes, i just wanna see you,
Whenever i find peace, I just wanna sit besides you,
In the crowd my eyes search for you,
No matter What comes my soul will always wait for you

Love you till the end of time,
Love you till the day you will be mine.

Still your memories never leave me alone,
I have not but my love has won,
Grateful to you for giving me this feeling
In the dark hours of my life it keeps me smiling.

Love you till the end of time,
Love you till the day you will be mine.

Jewel Bug perched on cup and saucer plant. I clicked this pic while on a nature trail in Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, Mumbai. Been to nature trail with loksatta editors group, it was a real fun roaming through the forest, identifying insects, flowers, butterflies, plants etc. Colour patterns on Jewel bug are really a creative work of nature, Beautiful creature isnt it???

I am there or not !!!

I am there or not,
Does it make any difference

To make you understand what my love is,
To make you understand what my soul needs,
Whenever my heart felt your absence,
Every time it shouted in silence !!!!

I am there or not,
Does it make any difference !!!

Doesn't really matter how much I love you,
Doesn't really matter how much I care for you,
Deep under the shadow of my loneliness,
In every moment i have felt your presence !!!

I am there or not,
Does it make any difference !!!
